An important relationship and conflict in the film is between Jake Sully and Colonel Miles Quaritch. Jake almost views Quaritch as a father figure early in the film. This changes however as Jake's loyaltys become tied to the Navi people and the protection rather than destruction of Pandora.

He is shown using low angles whereas Jake is shot from a high angle. Clearly this is an uneven balance of power where Quaritch is the dominant figure. Jake is willing to take orders and instruction from Quaritch and this is reflected through the use of these camera shots. Later in the film however these shots are reversed. Jake has developed as a character and become much more confident. He is sure of his convictions and no longer needs the approval of Quaritch as he has found a place of belonging within the Omaticaya tribe. During his major confrontation with Quaritch he is shown using a low angle conveying that the power balance has changed significantly.
