A significant setting is the RDA base. In the opening scene viewers are given a glimspe of the RDA base and mining operations from the window of Jake's spacecraft. The base appears to be a huge concrete monstrosity which seems out of place in the lush green, wilderness which is Pandora.

The base itself is overrun by machines and futuristic, destructive technology. Everything is artificial. This idea is further reinforced when we see our first glimpses inside the Panora forest when Jake meets a Navi woman, Neytiri for the first time. The differing attitudes and relationship with the environment is clearly conveyed here when Jake is attacked by an animal whom Neytiri is forced to kill in order to save Jake's life. Jake thanks Neytiri but is reprimanded for his ignornance and lack of understanding of nature and the value of life.
