BRUNO

Bruno is a young German boy whose father is the commander of Auschwitz. He is 9 years old and born on April 15th 1934 and has little understanding of the real world or what is happening. He is extremely naïve, friendly and trusting. Bruno does not understand what is happening in the war or why his friend Shmuel is treated so badly and made to live in Auschwitz. This naivety is shown in the way he calls Auschwitz “Out-With” and Hitler “the fury”. He also reguritates statements he has heard from adults without understanding the meaning behind the words. For example when he tells Shmuel that he is "Superior" because he is German. This is just something he has heard from his father.

IMPORTANCE
This character is important as he helps show the main theme - all people should be treated equally despite race, religion and culture. This is shown in the way he treats Shmuel despite the fact he is German and his Smuel is Jewish. His naivety also shows how easily young people can be manipulated.
