BRUNO AND SHMUEL

Shmuel is a Jewish prisoner who is 9 years old and has the same birthday as a young German boy named Bruno (April 15th 1934). He meets Bruno at the fence of Auschwitz while Bruno is exploring. They form an unlikely friendship and have much in common. Both end up being killed in the gas chamber when Bruno sneaks into Auschwitz to help Shmuel find his father.

IMPORTANCE

This relationship is important as it highlights the theme that all people should be treated equally despite race, religion and culture. This is shown as Bruno and Shmuel become best friends despite the war. The only difference between them is in their religion and appearance.
