THEME

People are all the same, despite race, religion, culture and ethnicity. People should be treated equally and with respect. This is best shown through Bruno and Shmuel who despite their differences and become firm friends. Bruno also dies in the same way as Shmuel. Being German didn’t save Bruno from dying in the same way as Shmuel who was a Jew. This reinforces that underneath people really are just the same. Another important idea is the power of ignorance and also to learn from the past. The novel is making the point that we, the human race must prevent such an event from ever occuring. We must learn from the past to pave the way to a better more moral future. It places responsibility on the individual to act out against intolerance and to stand up for those who are in need of help.
