ENDING

At the end of the short story Victoria is
arrested for stealing money from the
supermarket for her plastic surgery.
She is given community service as punishment.

WHY IS THE ENDING IMPORTANT?

This ending is important as it shows the main themes of the
story - That obsession can be destructive.

Victoria's obsession with her image isolates her from her family
and also causes her to end up being arrested for theft.

The ending also shows that Victoria has learnt from Kyles rejection of her.
She realises that you can not make people like you simply by changing
your appearance. You must accept yourself and your heritage to truly be happy.

Her realisation is shown in the ending of the story by the fact that she no longer
visits the treehouse anymore. When Victoria's little sister asks her if she thinks
of Kyle sometimes she replies "Kyle who?". This shows that she has lost her
obsession with Kyle and has stopped trying to change to impress other people.
