17.jpgIMPORTANT SCENE/MOMENT: Yankee Stadium Scene

An important scene in "Finding Forrester" is the Yankee Stadium scene where Jamal takes Forrester to
a baseball game for his birthday.

Why is this scene important?
This scene is important as it is the first time Forrester has left his apartment in years. It is also where he begins to open up to Jamal and tells him about his brother. This is an important moment as it shows the effect Jamal is having on Forrester. He is slowly beginning to
trust again and become less hostile. It also shows how their relationship has begun to change from teacher, student
to one of friendship.

What happens in this scene?
In this scene Jamal takes Forrester to a ball game. Forrester leaves the apartment covered with a long coat, dark glasses and a hat. This shows that he still feels the need to hide his identity from the world. He does however show a level of trust towards Jamal purely in leaving the apartment with him. Before they even enter the stadium however Forrester gets separated from Jamal. He has a panic attact and has to leave. Jamal then takes him to Yankee stadium where Forrester and his brother used to go as kids. It is here that Forrester finally begins to open up to Jamal and tells him of his past and why he only wrote one book.

Techniques used to show this incident:
  • Costume
  • Close-ups
  • Point of view shot
  • Non-diegetic sound
  • Long shot
  • Dialogue

Costume
Costume in this scene shows that Forrester is still uneasy being out in society. He attempts to prevent himself from being recognised by wearing a long coat, dark glasses and hat.

Close-ups
A close-up is used on Forrester's face when he loses Jamal at the ball game. The shot focus on the emotion on his face and shows the panic and fear that he is feeling at that moment. This shows that he is still very much afraid of being out in public.

Point of view shot
A point of shot is used when Forrester is scanning the crowd looking for Jamal. There is a quick montage of different peoples faces in the crowd which shows that Forrester is becoming panicked and feels insecure.

Non-diegetic sound
In this scene when Forrester gets lost viewers hear the sounds of people talking, noise makers and the ball game theme song. These noises become louder, faster and muffled as Forrester becomes increasingly overwhelmed by his fear.

Long shot
A long shot is used on Jamal and Forrester when they are standing on the pitch at Yankee Stadium. This is important as it shows that they have become much closer. They are no longer shown from different levels, for example the High/Low angles used at the start of the film. This implies that they are starting to build up a relationship based on friendship rather than fear.

Dialogue
When Forrester is at Yankee Stadium he begins to tell Jamal about his brother and why he only wrote one book. He tells of his brothers death and how "everything changed from then on". This honesty and revelation of his past helps show viewers that Jamal and Forrester have developed a bond between them. Forrester has started to trust Jamal and no longer tells him to stick to 'Soup questions'. Soup questions were what Forrester told Jamal to ask at the start of the film - they are questions which have purpose, not asked just to fullfill personal curiosity.
