IMPORTANT CONFLICT
In “The Notebook” an important conflict is between Allie Hamilton and her mother. Allie is in love with Noah Calhoun. Allie is a rich, upper-class, educated young woman. Noah is a poor, lower-class youth who works for 40 cents an hour at the local timber yard.
Allie has a major argument with her mother who disapproves of their relationship.
Unlike her husband Mrs Hamilton sees the relationship as something more than a summer romance and she is right. Allie tells her father that she loves him but her parents forbid her to see him. Her mother tells her that Noah is trash and not the right person for her.
“I love him Daddy”
“He is trash, trash, trash! Not for you!”
An action which further shows this conflict is when Allie’s mother decides to leave the next day back to Charleston. Allie is forced to go with her and leaves Noah after having a major argument. The situation between them is left unresolved.
Allie’s mother also hides every letter that Noah writes to Allie begging her to forgive him. He writes her 365 letters, one each day for a year. When she never replies Noah signs up to join the army and is sent into World War II.
Noah and Allie do not see each other again until seven years later. Noah restores a 200year old plantation home which he and Allie had talked about years before. Allie sees his photo in the paper and returns to Seabrook to see him. At this point she is also engaged to a wealthy upper-class gentleman named Lon Hammond. Allie soon realises she still has feelings for Noah and after finding out the truth about the letters decides on a life with Noah rather than Lon.

WHY IS THIS CONFLICT IMPORTANT?
This conflict between Allie and her mother is important as it highlights the prejudice that existed in 1940’s America. It also shows the challenges that Allie and Noah had to overcome to be together. The fact that Allie chooses her true love over the person society expects her to marry shows the theme of the film – The power of true love. It also shows that love can overcome any obstacle, even social status, family meddling, and war.
