This moment helps show the theme of the story - That obsession can be destructive. This moment of rejection by Kyle helps Victoria to realise that beauty does not always buy happiness and that she needs to accept who she is. Changing herself for others and denying who she is will not help her fit in and be accepted. Kyle does not like her after her operation, in fact he thinks she is in disguise and calls the police! Because of this event Victoria realises how badly her obsession and low self-esteem has effected her life. She stops hiding herself in her treehouse and pretends Kyle never existed.
