Jamal and William's relationship is important as it help shows the main theme of the film which is the importance
of friendship. William teaches Jamal to fight for his dreams and to stand up for what he beleives in. He challenges
him constantly by baiting him with racist remarks. "But your Black!". This causes Jamal to become defensive however
he later realises that this is part of his problem. He assumes everyone judges him because of his colour before he even
gets to know them. He lets this get in the way of forming friendships and letting people help him.
Claire (a friend and love interest at Maylor Callow) states: "Why does everything have to be so black and white with you"
Jamal teaches William to trust again and together they help each other achieve their dreams.
