"Hideout" written by Lorraine Orman is the story of two sisters whose homelife has spun out of control. Fifteen year old Roz knows she has to take charge. She packs up her younger sister Dawn from their Wellington home and the two of them flee to a friend's beach house at Pukerua Bay. Dawn is only 9 and is being abused by Stan, her alcoholic mother's boyfriend. Numerous other issues arise with Roz being haunted by mysterious, ancestral voices from Kapiti Island. This seems to have a link with the fact that Roz does not know her father or family history. Dawn and Roz struggle through their time at Pukerua Bay and learn some serious life lessons along the way.

Chapter 1:
Roz and Dawn wake up, Dawn has a cold. Roz and Dawn pack their bag ready for Pukerua Bay, Roz then steals 3 twenty dollar notes from Sylvia's purse and her cell phone. They left the house and went to the trainstation and caught the train to Pukerua Bay. They met a lady on the train and Dawn told the lady she had Bronchitis.

Chapter 2:
Roz and Dawn walked down a zig zag path from viewing a platform. They got to the Naylors house,and couldnt find the key.

Chapter 3:
They went to Don Nepias house for the spare key to the Naylors house. When they eventually got into the house they chose which bedrooms they wanted. The Cell phone they stole from Syliva rand and so they switched it off.
Chapter 4:
Roz decides to go to the superette at the busiest time which is 3pm. She goes there to steal food. Has flashbacks about her best friend Louise. We learn how they view themselves in popularity status (fringe dwellers). Roz thinks about the Wild Women website that they designed. We also learn that Roz is jealous of Louise's normal loving family. Roz checks her voice mail on the cell phone and hears the abusive message that Sylvia has left. Roz also leaves a message for Louise saying that they are okay.

Chapter 5:
Roz confronts Dawn about what happened with Stan, but Dawn still pushes her away.
Dawn dreams about Stan.
We found out where Roz's family is from.
Roz relives Vicky telling her about her father

Chapter 6:
Roz buys + steals some more fresh food at the superette. She buys an Asterix book for Dawn from Arcadia Books next door. A good looking guy of sixteen or seventeen with dark eyes + pale skin. Roz finds him appealing.
Roz and Dawn lights a fire at fireplace. Dawn puts a hunk of wood and thick smoke fills up the room. Don Nepia comes up to check on them.
Chapter 7:
Roz goes to the bookshop again. She has a chat with the guy instead of buying a book. His name is Vic.
Roz gets caught stealing in the superette. The owner lets her go with a warning. On the way back to the beach house Roz spots Dawn balancing in the edge of a rock a long way from the beach, facing the open sea. Dawn falls into the sea.

Chapter 8:
After Dawn falls into the sea, Don found his dog Daisy barking at the sea and he realised Dawn has fall in and he saved her up.
Don carried Dawn home and Roz was afraid he would found out they are on their own.
Roz and Dawn had a conversation over Syliva and how are they going to live later on.
Roz tried to make Dawn tell her what has exactly happened the night at Syliva's Birthday, but Dawn refused.
Roz felt Dawn was keeping something hidden from her.

Chapter 9:
Roz and Dawn visit Aunt Lovely and leave flowers by her grave.
Roz found Stan with Dawn and Dawn wouldn't talk about it
Don says spiritual, mythical stories about Kapiti Island
Don talked about the tribes who used to live on the island
Don delivers a pie to Roz and Dawn's door
They've been at Pukerua Bay for a whole week
They have very little money

Chapter 10:
Roz tries to steal a book but Vic catches her
Roz and Vic have a drink together and talk about their dreams and lives
Roz tries to thank Don for the pie. He says "must have been Daisy".
Roz recognizes an old Maori song that Don is humming but doesn't know where it's from
Roz asks Don if he has a telephone

Chapter 11:
Prelude: We find out that after reading the note that Roz left, Sylvia and Gloria discussed it, Sylvia dumped Stan, and Gloria told her she needed to turn her life around, after Sylvia was binge drinking
Roz visits Vic again at the bookstore, she tells him everything about why she and Dawn are at Pukerua Bay,she confides/confesses in him
Vic tells Roz his 'story', he was expelled, he wants to draw for a living, and he also feels a connection to Kapiti Island
Roz asks Vic to email Louise for her, to tell her that she is safe and OK.

Chapter 12:
Dawn starts to feel that she doesnt want to be Pukeura Bay anymore. She wants to go to Auckland to see her dad.
Dawn feels that Roz isnt looking after her and she also gets ill.
Dawn lets her secrets out to 'Aunty Lovley' about what Stan said and did to her.
