Itzhak Stern & Oskar Schindler
An important relationship in Schindler's List is between Itzhak Stern and Oskar Schindler.

Schindler’s Jewish accountant acts as his conscience. Stern is an intelligent man who never loses his pride in the face of the violent and dehumanizing conditions the Jews face under the Nazi regime. He is able to influence the good, moral side of Schindler. Initially Stern despises Schindler – only seeing Schindler’s materialistic and greedy qualities. However as Schindler develops so does his relationship with Stern. It changes from employer/employee to a genuine friendship. Without Stern it is unlikely Schindler would have made the choices that he did in saving his Jewish workers.

Scenes which show this relationship:

  • Initial meeting, discussing the employment of Jewish or Polish workers
  • Argument over Stern’s hiring of workers who are not “essential”, turning point.
  • Ending scene, Schindler embracing Stern, giving of the ring and letter.

Techniques which show this relationship:

  • Dialogue
  • Close-ups
  • Symbolism (ring)
