treehouse.jpgSETTING:

Australia. The treehouse.

Description:

Too small for Victoria now she is bigger. The walls are covered
in cuttings of beautiful people from magazines. She often hides
there when she is upset or feeling insecure about something.

Why is this Setting Important?

Helps show the theme of isolation and how destructive obsession can become.
The setting also helps show the dislocation Victoria feels from both her heritage
and the society that she lives in. She uses the treehouse to physically isolate
herself from the rest of the world and her problems. It is where she feels safe
and accepted. The destructive nature of obsession is shown by how Victoria's
relationship with her family suffers because of her obsession with her image.
She isolates herself from them by sitting in the treehouse instead of talking to
them about her problems.

Quote:

  • "She would go up there to hide and be by herself”
  • “The walls were papered by magazine cuttings of beautiful celebrities”
  • "In the treehouse the dolls waited silently for Victoria who didn't visit them anymore"
