Ending - Important incident - Twist
An important moment at the end of the text is when Mr Van Gogh has a heart attack and the young boy and his father see inside Mr Van Gogh’s house. Inside they find that his whole house is covered by beautiful replicas of the artwork of Vincent Van Gogh. Frank Wilcox has spent his whole life and savings creating these works.

A suprising twist is that despite this discovery the house is torn down to make way for a bridge. The town demolishes the house while Mr Van Gogh is in hospital and can not do anything about it.

Importance of this Ending - Event - Twist
Seeing inside the house gives the boy (and readers) a new insight into Mr Van Gogh’s personality and values. That Mr Souness and the rest of the community can still allow the house to be destroyed after seeing the art inside reinforces the small mindedness and materialistic values of the community. (theme) Another theme shown by this twist is the idea of not judging by appearances. Not all is at it seems and appearances can be decieving - beauty it often on the inside, as was the case with Mr Wilcox and his home.
