TRISTAN THORN
‘Stardust’ revolves around the character of Tristan Thorn and his journey from a boy to a man. He sets out on a quest to find a fallen star in the magical kingdom of Stormhold. The purpose of his search is to impress his sweetheart, the shallow and vain Victoria. During this quest Tristan finds the star, who unexpectedly is a beautiful woman named Yvaine. Tristan and Yvaine grow together both learning the value of true love and the important lesson of not to trying to be something you are not.
At the start of the film Tristan is a shy and unconfident shop boy. He considers Victoria to be a better person than him simply because she is popular, rich and beautiful. He stumbles over his words when talking to her and is extremely nervous. Tristan has low self-esteem and does not stand up for himself when Humphrey challenges him in the street. He also does not see that Victoria is only using him for what he can give her. She does not care for him at all. Tristan is trusting and naive with little life experience. He could also be described as being immature and idealistic. He is adventurous and has dreams or ambitions that few in Wall can understand.
By the end of the film Tristan has changed considerably. Instead of throwing stones at Victoria’s window like a school boy he knocks at her front door. This shows he has more conficence in himself. He is no longer blinded by Victoria’s beauty and can see how shallow she is. Tristan tells her to “grow up” and get over herself. He also stands up for himself when Humphrey arrives and again challenges him to a duel. Tristan has developed into a strong, confident person who later becomes King of Stormhold. Through his time in Stormhold he has gained much more life experience and appears to have grown from a boy into a man. Tristan has realised his dreams and in the process found true love.
