Good always triumphs over evil

This theme is shown by the moment in the film where Tristan and Yvaine defeat the evil witch Lamia and her sisters Mormo and Empusa.

The power of true love to overcome all obstacles
This theme is shown by the relationship between Tristan and Yvaine. At the start of the film Tristan thinks he is on love with a snobby and vain young woman named Victoria. He sets out to retrieve a star (Yvaine) for Victoria's birthday. During his journey back to Wall with Yvaine Tristan finds himself falling in love. He begins to realise that what he felt for Victoria was not true love. Yvaine teaches him that love is unconditional. True love is not dependant on appearances or what you can gain from the other person. Not only do Tristan and Yvaine have to overcome the obstacle of Victoria to be together they also have to defeat the witches who are trying to capture Yvaine to take her heart. Both these obstacles are overcome because of the power of their love.

To be yourself and not judge people by appearances - not everything is as it seems
This theme is shown by the character of Tristan Thorn. At the start of the film Tristan is judged by others in the community. He does not fit in like others his age and wants to explore the world rather than stay in Wall his whole life. Victoria, (the young lady he has a crush on) looks down on Tristan and doesn't consider him to be good enough for her. He is clumsy, shy, and has little self confidence. Tristan constantly tries to impress Victoria and instead of being himself changes to try and make her like him.

However, at the end of the film it is revealed that Tristan is not just a shop boy. Tristan is actually a prince of the magical kingdom of Stormhold. Throughout the film Tristan also learns through his relationship with the star Yvaine to be himself. He realises that if someone cannot love you for who you are then it is not true love at all. When Tristan returns to Wall he has grown more confident and is secure in who he is as a person. He sees Victoria for the shallow and vain person she truly is and tells her to grow up. When Tristan returns to Stormhold he learns that he is the only heir of Stormhold and as such is the new King. This event reinforces the idea of not judging people by appearances. Victoria could not see Tristan's true worth and valued only appearances. She only realises what she has lost when Tristan rejects her for Yvaine.
